Brooklyn duo Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, better known as MGMT, will have the distinct pleasure of warming up the sure-to-be excited crowd for Paul McCartney’s two-night stint at Fenway Park in Boston August 5th and 6th.

If you had MGMT as likeliest opening act selection for the ex-Beatle give yourself a pat on the back because I don’t think many expected this popular twosome. But McCartney gets high marks for keeping things interesting by tapping the alt. popsters to kick things off.

It seems not that long ago McCartney told a gossip website that he’d like to work with MGMT.

“I like MGMT,” he told the Zoe Griffin blog. “I’d like to work on some more dancey stuff with MGMT. But it has to happen organically.”

“We need to talk about it. I can’t call them. If they called me, I’d say, ‘How did you get my number?’ But I’d do it.”

MGMT recently performed at The 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. Their 2 a.m. set on the morning of Saturday, June 13th had many fans and press heralding their performance as one of the highlights of the festival.

MGMT released their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, in January 2008. The duo are scheduled to appear at the All Points West festival in New Jersey on August 2.

What do you think about McCartney’s choice of MGMT as his opening act in Boston?
