Quincy Jones Ready to Buy Vibe Magazine
By Morelli
Music magazine Vibe announced that all print operations would be shut down on June 30. But not all is lost, according to magazine founder (and Michael Jackson’s producer) Quincy Jones, who told Ebonyjet:
“I’m trying to buy my magazine back now. They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’ma take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”
After recovering from the death of Michael Jackson, Jones’ ambitions for Vibe will be focused online. Reportedly, Vibe.com is profitable, while the print edition has years of accumulated debt.
“We gotta get into the 21st century you know,” Jones said. “Print and all that stuff is over, we gotta remember that. The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Miami Herald. They’re over the same way as the record business. We have got to get into this century.”
With Quincy Jones behind the wheel, the digital version of Vibe will have every chance to succeed. But success probably depends on whether or not Jones gets weighed down with the company’s debts with the acquisition the brand’s name and archive.
Can Quincy Jones re-launch Vibe magazine? Is online the undisputed solution?
