New Music: David Bowie, Pearl Jam, We Have Band, Kyle Hollingsworth, The Bronx
By Jeffrey Hyatt
A solid five-some on deck this week of music for the Coming Soon file; a nice mix old-school heavyweights and exciting new artists.
Everyone’s favorite Thin White Duke, David Bowie returns with a re-release of a special-edition EP of the spooky, rock classic “Space Oddity” on July 20, the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s stroll on the moon. This time with a DIY spin.
Four versions of the song (three edits and a 1979 rerecording) will be released as The Space Oddity Digital EP, according to Bowie’s website. Buyers will get eight tracks featuring various instruments for free, which can be rearranged and remixed by fans.
The original “Space Oddity” was released July 11, 1969, nine days prior to Apollo 11’s Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin Jr. landing on the moon.
The EP will include four different versions of the song and have this tracklisting:
- 1. “Space Oddity” (original UK mono single edit)
- 2. “Space Oddity” (US mono single edit)
- 3. “Space Oddity” (US stereo single edit)
- 4. “Space Oddity” (1979 re-record)

Look out for the latest offering from Los Angeles punk band The Bronx, newly reincarnated for their next record performing as Mariachi El Bronx; the band’s self-titled full-length will be released on September 1st on Swami Records.
The band will perform in a variety of different ways, sometimes incorporating mariachi into their punk set, sometimes playing two nights at a venue performing each band respectively, often having one band open for the other. This embodiment of The Bronx was originally conceived as a new twist on the electric-goes-acoustic performance. Citing the influence of various worldwide locales, as well as the addition of guitarron player Vincent Hidalgo (son of David Hidalgo of Los Lobos and Latin Playboys,) eventually Mariachi El Bronx was born.
According to the band, “mariachi music is every bit as much a soundtrack to southern California” as The Bronx’s raucous punk rock.
