Concert Picks: Future of the Left, The Telephones, Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited…
By Lindsey Darden
“TGIF”? What did Monday through Thursday ever do to you, huh? All sentiments aside, these are the acts to see this weekend; check out the few and the proud below:
- Future of the Left | Friday, July 31 | 8:30 pm | $12 | 21+ | Spaceland, Silverlake, CA – Map | There’s no question that Future of the Left knows how to rock out, if only to the strum of their own electric guitar, the octave of their choosing, the rapid beat of their own drum. They are the most delectable acquired taste, if only for the first track you might sink your teeth into – afterwards, the UK-based band is entirely palatable, as can be heard on their most recent album “Travels with Myself and Another”. They will be supported by Vancouver-based “I can’t believe it’s two-piece” band Japandroids and local band Dead Ponies. Click here for tickets.
- The Telephones | Friday, July 31 | 10:00 pm | Free | Freddy’s Bar and Back Room, New York, NY – Map | They’re baaaack, and they’re treating us to yet another free show. The local band brings to the table a brand of “much more than decent” original music a la Elliot Smith on a good day, and a sound that could kick Maroon 5 out of the spotlight on any other. For more information, please call (718) 622-7035.
- The Luke Mulholland Band | Saturday, August 1 | 7:30 pm | $15 | The Viper Room, West Hollywood, CA – Map | The band’s rich, soulful, classic rock-inspired stylings will be supporting Guns N’ Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed – along with fellow bands Gramercy Riffs, Lunar Sway, Her Voice Remains, and Vaudevillian – on the small but famed stage at the popular Sunset strip venue. Check out our review for their most recent album, “Further”, here; click here for tickets.
- Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited Orchestra | Saturday, August 1 | 8:00 pm | $18.50 | Freight and Salvage, Berkeley, CA – Map | Whether live acoustic performance or in studio, Claudia Russell is one of those performers gifted enough to sound good no matter how amplified or subdued (some of her live tracks are available for streaming at her MySpace). The local singer-songwriter will b joined by special guest Dan Navarro. Click here for tickets.
- Botfly | Sunday, August 2 | 6:00 pm | $10-$30 | Sullivan Hall, New York, NY – Map | What better way for the Hartford, Connecticut-based band to further interest from their most recent album, entitled “Emergence”, than by showcasing their talents by way of the Battle of the Bands 2009: US Series. Click here for the official flyer (courtesy of the band’s MySpace) and a list of any and all bands to come out with vocals and compositions swinging; for more information, call (866) 468-7619.
