Tenacious D Will Replace Beastie Boys At Outside Lands
By Jeffrey Hyatt
The D (!) is headed to San Francisco for the 2009 Outside Lands Music Festival. The D we speak of is Tenacious D, aka Jack Black and Kyle Glass, who were chosen to replace the Beastie Boys as the Sunday night headliner.
The music festival is set to run from August 28-30 in Golden Gate Park. The festival’s killer line-up includes Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Band of Horses, The National, Dead Weather, Black Eyed Peas and many more.
Sunday’s night show will mark Tenacious D’s first appearance in the Bay Area in three years and debut on the festival circuit.
The Beastie Boys recently canceled a bunch of shows, and delayed their new album release, after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. BeatCrave reported earlier this week that Yauch is safe at home resting after undergoing surgery.
Jay-Z subbed in for the Beastie Boys at All Points West, while the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will play the Beasties’ slot at Lollapalooza on Saturday.
“I just want to say one thing: If there’s any dogs barking on the day, August 30th, before we go on, don’t be alarmed. That’s just them sensing the earthquake of rock that is coming,” Black said.
“Dogs have an innate sense of knowing when a gigantic rock storm is coming.” Black also warned that the rock emanating from the speakers on August 30th might actually sever the San Andreas fault line. “California may be shaking loose from the rest of the country,” Black says.
Tenacious D has been mostly low-key since the release of the movie and soundtrack to The Pick of Destiny in 2006. They did tour in 2007.
Black hasn’t been low-key. He’s been acting in flicks like Year One, Be Kind Rewind, Tropic Thunder and Kung Fu Panda (just voiceover work on that one). He’s a busy guy, so it’s nice he still has time to rock out with buddy Glass.
