A Flight Of The Conchords Movie? Duo Talk About Show’s Future

A Flight Of The Conchords Movie

Still bummed that season two of Flight Of The Conchords would be the last for the funky-folk duo from New Zealand? Me too.

And even though we have new records on the way and tour dates, it’s still sad there will be no season 3 to continue the kooky (and very funny) hi-jinks of the musical duo.

Ah, but never say never — according to a cast member, Flight Of The Conchords could return in the form of a movie or stage show.

Rhys Darby, who plays the duo’s luckless manager Murray Hewitt, told NME.com that after they wrapped the second season, the team wanted to think things over before pushing delete completely on the series.

“I’m open to whatever Bret [McKenzie] and Jemaine [Clement] want, it’s their baby and I’m just along for the ride,” Darby tells NME.

“I know they’re going to take a year off, but there’s already a bit of pressure already from people saying ‘How can you end this thing now?’”

According to Darby no decision has been made one way or the other. He mentions that there are, in fact, orders for another season, but Clement and McKenzie might follow the lead of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who created the original, UK version of The Office, and walk away after two successful seasons.

Said Darby:

“We’re being pulled different ways. Even if we do go on, there are different options there. Do we do a Christmas special, or a film or even turn it into a stage show and tour the world with it? It’s still a full on ‘who knows?’ scenario!”

Hey, we’ll take a Christmas special.  It worked for The Office. But the idea of a Flight Of The Conchords movie definitely intrigues; I still contend that the show is best-served with a fresh helping of 10 or 12 episodes, but a wild and wacky 2-hour film could be fun. If Tenacious D can make a movie certainly so can Flight Of The Conchords.

My vote is for a season 3; I honestly thought season 2 would shuttle the guys out to Los Angeles for an episode or two, so there is still an opportunity to get the Conchords out of New York City with a new season of the show.

I’m a huge fan of the series and the group, so I’m down with any sort of return of Bret and Jermaine.

The second season of Flight Of The Conchords is now out on DVD.

What do you think about a Flight Of The Conchords movie? Or would you prefer another season of the show?
