Time to stop working for the weekend and start enjoying it. Here are some great shows for you to check out East and West coasters…

  • Natalie Gelman | Friday, August 14 | 5:00 pm | Free | Best Buy Chelsea, New York, NY – Map | Nothing quite compares to the experience of a full-fledged stadium event – still, neither does an in-store performance. Subway performer-turned-up and coming singer-songwriter Natalie Gelman will be taking to the platform, entertaining those amongst the aisles of albums – a musical experience of the ultimate sort, or something like it. For more information, call (212) 366-1373.
  • Alyson Greenfield | Friday, August 14 | 7:00 pm | $7 | Public Assembly, New York NY – Map | The saucy new wave-sounding vocal cousin of Natalie Merchant [okay, maybe not literally] will be playing in the back room  of the venue with Soldier On Dear Friend and The Fearsome Sparrow. For more info, call (718) 384-4586.

  • Alexx Calise | Friday, August 14 | $10-$12 | The Viper Room, West Hollywood, CA – Map | The LA implant from Fort Lauderdale, FL brings a familiar feminine edge to modern alt-rock, putting enough of a spin on the genre to keep it interesting. If you want to get in for free you have to be on the guest list, so email your way in here, or click here for tickets. Also playing: Electric Blondes, Krashkarma, Thunderdikk, and Blacklist Union.
  • 9th Annual Art and Soul Oakland | Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16 | 12pm – 6pm | $5 for seniors, $10 for adults, free for kids 12 and under| Downtown Oakland, CA – Click here for directions | The two-day event boasts over 40 jazz, R&B, rock, and blues acts on seven stages. Headliners include Shawn Colvin, Ramana Vieira, Kevin Moore, Will Downing, Frankie Lee, and Zakiya Hooker.  For more info, visit the official event website at artandsouloakland.com.
  • Part Time Punks | Sunday, August 16 | 10:00 pm | 18+ | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA – Map | DJs Michael Stock and Benny Shambles (aka Part Time Punks) will be taking over the venue with a mish-mash of indie-pop disco hybrids. They will also be joined by Silk Flowers and Nite Jewel. For more information, call (213) 413-8200.
