Bob Dylan returns to the road with his ‘never-ending’ tour October 5th in Seattle. That’s good news, but even better news for fans is that joining Dylan will be his old buddy and Arc Angels guitarist Charlie Sexton. That’s right, he has rejoined the group.

The Texas-based Sexton has been a part of Dylan’s circle since the 1980s and officially joined the band in 1999, where he played until 2002. Sexton can be heard on Dylan’s Love and Theft and Masked & Anonymous. Earlier this month Sexton sat in with Dylan in Round Rock Texas, causing rumors that a reunion was imminent, according to Rolling Stone.

“I love and respect Bob and am very happy to be reunited with my friend onstage,” Sexton tells Rolling Stone.

“I’m starting up with him for the fall tour and will carry on with him from there.” He’s unwilling to say any more about what brought him back. “I’ve never given an interview about Bob,” he says. “Ultimately he is my friend, and it’s not my place to talk about his business.”

It’s a busy time for Sexton as he returns to the Dylan family. Earlier this year he reformed the blues-rock trio the Arc Angels with Doyle Bramhill II and Chris Layton. Look for a new CD/DVD set in October.

Despite re-joining Dylan — who tends to play about 100 shows as year — the Arc Angels will continue to tour and record during Dylan’s downtime.

“Being a working musician or a producer or anything these days, being a fluctuating business, you gotta work, you gotta shape-shift,” Sexton says. “You gotta do whatever it takes. Myself, the Arc Angels, most people I work with, we’re all lifers. It’s what we do. We just keep on going.”

Fans of ’80s blues-rock-pop might recall Sexton’s Pictures for Pleasure and the top-20 hit single “Beat’s So Lonely.”

It was in ’99 when Sexton was hired by Bob Dylan to replace Bucky Baxter.

Sexton’s time spent with Dylan and the band is viewed by many as a highpoint in the never-ending tour.
