Forget about Thom Yorke; that’s old news! The word is out: Death Cab For Cutie‘s song, “Meet Me on the Equinox” will be the first single from the New Moon soundtrack!

Twilight author, Stephanie Meyers, has just posted the cover art for the soundtrack (above) and stated that Death Cab’s song has been chosen by Atlantic Records and well-known music supervisor, Alex Patsavas. The single will premiere on MTV.com on September 13th, which is the same day as the MTV Video Music Awards.

It feels like it came out of nowhere especially since we’ve already heard a hand full of artists announced such as Bon Iver, Band of Skulls, and Muse (again) who may all be in the mix.

Death Cab For Cutie’s Nick Harmer told MTV that they were so out of the submission process, that this was a shock to them as well:

“We didn’t expect it would be chosen for the first single — we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe. I have no idea if ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It’s been an exciting process, because we’ve been so removed from it. We were in L.A. for a week and we went into the studio and wrote and recorded the song and submitted it. We didn’t know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week like, ‘Guess what — your song has been chosen as the first single.’ “

After realizing how lucky they were, they gave this official statement on Stephanie Meyers’ website:

“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.”

Sure, not everyone is into vampires but at least these Twi-hards will be broadening their musical palettes with some indie goodness, right?

The New Moon soundtrack was originally slated for an October 13th release but it has been pushed back a week later to October 20th.

What do you think of Death Cab For Cutie having the lead single?
