Music Site Vevo Joins CBS, NBC?
By Krystal Clark
If you’ve been following the status of the upcoming music video site Vevo, this bit of news may interest you. Vevo is to music what Hulu is to television. According to Reuters, the website is due to launch this winter and has several big companies dying to be a part of it. Hulu has become an overnight sensation, and is backed by NBC Universal, News Corp and the Walt Disney Co. Can they work their magic for music fans?
Vevo is “designed to offer high-quality music videos and music-related programing. It will be separate from Google’s YouTube, whose technology will be the framework for the new site.” So far the site has signed one content and equity partnership agreement with Sony Music Entertainment. Future deals that are expected to take place include the Warner Music and EMI Group.
The partnership of CBS, ABC, Fox, and NBC are also possibilities since Vevo plans on offering original programming as well as music videos. At the moment YouTube and Hulu dominate the outlet for TV and videos, but that doesn’t mean Vevo can’t find its niche. It appears to me that the original programming gate may be a good way to set itself a part. There’s also an option of their material crossing over from the web to broadcast television if the major networks are interested in the deal.
What do you think about Vevo? Could it be better than YouTube or MySpace for music videos?
