Snoop Dogg named Creative Chair of EMI Priority Records

Musician turned mogul Calvin Broadus aka Snoop Dogg can add another executive title to his long resume. According to Variety, the rapper has been brought on as the Creative Chairman of EMI’s Priority Records. That’s right, Snoop Doggy Dogg has got a seat on the board. After label hopping for the past 15 years or so, the rapper has returned to his former music home.

As part of his new found position, Snoop Dogg will executive produce a series of Priority releases geared to the label’s 25th anniversary in 2010. As a west coast rap artist this will be familiar territory for the newly appointed director. Some of the musicians who got their start at the label include NWA, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube.

This December Snoop will release his latest album, Malice ‘N Wonderland on the label, which will once again reunite him with mentor Dr. Dre, and Pharrell from The Neptunes. Some other musical acts that will make appearances include R. Kelly, Soulja Boy and Jazmine Sullivan.

Snoop is following in the footsteps of many rappers turned executives, such as Jay-Z, Ludacris, and Scarface to name a few. I’m all for rappers diversifying their portfolios, and I do think Snoop is a great choice for this position. I remember a time when Priority Records was the place to be for all hardcore west coast artists. Perhaps, he can bring some of that former glory back to the label?

What do you think about Snoop Dogg being named the Creative Chairman of Priority Records?
