The Besnard Lakes Scoring Mark Ruffalo Film

The Besnard Lakes have a big fan in actor Mark Ruffalo (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Zodiac).

In fact, Ruffalo was so blown away after hearing the song “Because the Night” from their 2007 album The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse that the actor asked the indie-rockers to score his directorial debut, Sympathy For Delicious.

Says Ruffalo, “It was a perfect piece of music. It has longing and hope and melancholy; a love story gone well and then badly and then lived out…I could see whole films in their songs.”

The film, which stars Orlando Bloom, Juliette Lewis, Laura Linney and Ruffalo, is about a paralyzed DJ who discovers he posses a gift for curing the sick.

In a press release Ruffalo spoke of his decision to tap the Montreal-based Besnard Lakes for his new film:

“Sympathy For Delicious is a magic and agnostic rock ‘n’ roll revival, and I wanted a score to the film that felt questioning and cinematic,” Ruffalo says. “The Besnard Lakes is a perfect match to what we have been trying to achieve with the movie; something rough and not overproduced, not devoid of guts, full of humanity and messy around the edges.

“Their music is not just a clutch of songs but a cinematic experience that evolves dramatically and carries poetry in the tidy complexity of its parts. I am very proud to have them. They bring a living, breathing and vibrant quality to the existing story that is rare to find in film scores.”

The Besnard Lakes are also working on the follow-up to The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse.

Look for the new album in early 2010.
