Battling Monday morning headlines with Kanye West, who is on a personal quest to win “Jerk of the Year”, Janet Jackson made quite an impression Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Not long after she put the finishing touches on a dance medley tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson, Janet posted a new single, “Make Me,” on her official website. The song is most likely from her upcoming album due in early 2010. Upbeat and catchy, the new tune features a chorus of “Don’t stop till you get it up,” a nice homage to her brother’s 1979 hit “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.”

Check below for Janet’s VMA performance.

Jackson posted a link about the new song via her Twitter page:

“I hope u guys enjoyed us tonight,” she wrote. “It was very special for me n I have a very special gift for all of u.”

Prior to the release of her new song, Jackson capped a whirlwind dance tribute to her brother by performing their 1995 duet “Scream,” which was presented in front of a massive screen that projected the elaborate video. Talk about reviving your career with the help of your dead brother.

The opening medley featured hits like “Thriller,” “Bad,” and “Smooth Criminal”; this was preceded by an opening show speech from Madonna, who basically blamed herself and everyone else for Jackson’s circus life and eventual death.

It was touching enough as she recounted her relationship, however fleeting, with the King of Pop and his affect on her, but it quickly went south into maudlin praise that ultimately put the burden of his passing, albeit terribly tragic, on everyone but Jackson. It was neither the time or place to point fingers, but one gets the impression Madonna has her own demons of life in the celebrity bubble that have been exacerbated by Jackson’s death.

But about that new Janet Jackson song. 8 out of 10 after one listen; It’s funky, it has catchy beats and that naughty chorus works well.

Jackson’s work has been mostly uneven the last few years, so it’s good to see her come through with a solid return with “Make Me,” especially on a night that surely was special and emotional.

So, what’s your take on Janet’s new song and her VMAs appearance?

Kudo's to whoever did Janet's choreography. The routine was cool, but I'm really tired of Janet lip-synching. Have you noticed she is really starting to look more and more like papa Joe in a lace-front weave. I'm glad she did a tribute but I like Latoya's song Home tribute better. Latoya's vocals are much better and she is the only one with any personality in the family and she was the first there at the hospital, signed the death certificate, and planned the memorial, and has since promoted Michael's charities. Janet went right back to work on Tyler Perry's movie and back in the studio to record yet another sex song with a dated beat just in time to make money off of her brother's death. Sad, Sad, Sad.
