New Moon Soundtrack Goes Indie For Softer Touch
By Seraphina L.
After the first Twilight soundtrack sold 2.2 million copies (Neilsen SoundScan), artists, managers, publicists and labels have been scrambling for a spot on the next album.
So far Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and Band of Skulls are all confirmed for New Moon‘s soundtrack. Death Cab for Cutie also scored big time as their song, “Meet Me on the Equinox” was chosen as the soundtrack’s leading single. However, famous music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas (known for placing the music for Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl and the first Twilight film), has told the New York Times, that the track listing is not complete yet.
She has informed the NY Times that not only are labels pitching songs and artists for New Moon but some are even asking her to think about giving their artists a spot on the Eclipse soundtrack, which will be part three of the Twilight saga:
“I can’t tell you how many submissions and suggestions I get from fans who found my name out somehow. They not only suggest their friends’ unknown bands but maybe their 50 favorite songs.”
The most fascinating tidbit Patsavas shared – or rather DIDN’T share – with the newspaper is whether Grizzly Bear and The Killers will have spots on the New Moon soundtrack. the NY Times states that “Representatives of Grizzly Bear and The Killers said those groups would be on the soundtrack, but Ms. Patsavas declined to comment.”
Twilight‘s first soundtrack featured two of the biggest names in pop-punk genre with Paramore and Linkin Park in order to capture the thriller vibe alongside the romantic suspense. However, since New Moon is all about the loss of love (Robert Pattinson’s character “Edward” leaves Kristen Stewart’s character “Bella” – you Twi-hards know that she falls into an absurd depression), they are going for a “soft, melancholy touch.” Perhaps this is why Ben Gibbard and his bandmates were shoo-ins.
In conjunction with Atlantic Records, the soundtrack’s label, Chop Shop, is also taking one step further to engage the target audience. After seeing how MTV fans ate up anything they dished out, plans with MySpace, iTunes and Hot Topic are in the works.
Yes, HOT TOPIC. Hopefully, there aren’t any Bon Iver or Thom Yorke fans who still shop at Hot Topic. We love Death Cab For Cutie, but we can see how the emo kids can easily fall in love with them, too.
The track listing will be completed and announced on Friday. Who else do you think will get a spot on the soundtrack?

Solid soundtrack! Lykke Li, The Killers and Anya Karina is a nice block of songs. Death Cab for Cutie was a nice fit too.
