Fucked Up is now not only known for their crazy stage presence but also as the winner of the 2009 Polaris Prize.

Judged by a panel comprised of Canadian journalists, broadcasters, bloggers, programmers and other experts, their album, The Chemistry of Common Life, beat out other short list nominees such as Metric (Fantasy), K’NAAN (Troubadour), and Malajube (Labyrinthes).

As winner of the annual Canadian award for best full-length album, they also got a nice chunk of change – $20,000! Any band is willing to take that prize money, but according to Prefix Magazine, Fucked Up almost didn’t make the cut for the nominee list. Pink Eyes said they had trouble entering the award ceremony:

“We got frisked on our way in and I said ‘this [evening] is gonna suck’. But at least we’ll get a free iPod. Well, we won the Polaris. Its a lot better than an iPod.”

We say: Well, at least they can buy as many iPods as they want now.
