When we say intimate, we mean EXTREMELY intimate. Mackenzie Phillips, former actress of sitcom comedy, “One Day At a Time,” recently wrote a memoir titled, High On Arrival. The book basically re-lives every hectic moment of her life as the daughter of the Mamas and the Papas‘ John Phillips.
According to CNN (via People.com), who got an advanced copy of her book, Phillips’ writing reveals that she and her father had slept together and that it wasn’t rape because it eventually became consensual. What? Yes, Mackenzie Phillips and her father had sex together but as she explains, there were many factors that led up to it.
Although her father’s drug addiction was well documented, hers began much sooner than most people knew. She tried cocaine for the first time at 11, she grew up with messed up rock stars, and after her break out performance in American Graffiti, she had battled with drug addiction as well during her time on the sitcom.
Her father became a comfort as her life got out of control and it all started just as crazy, according to her memoir:
“On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it [...] I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.”
Take note that John Phillips was aware of their unusual relationship which is illustrated when she also writes:
“I was a fragment of a person, and my secret isolated me [...] One night Dad said, ‘We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.”
Phillips talked about her memoir and her secret of 31 years with Oprah today. It was also the release date for her book today.
That’s a big secret to let out. Her father has passed away but what will her fans think? Does the other Phillips daughter, Chynna – of the popular 90′s all-female group, Wilson Phillips – have traumatic secrets as well? Or is she still squeaky clean and telling people to “Hold On?”
This news has definitely beat out any mischief her other half-sister, Bijou, dished out in the past but for everyone’s sake, we hope that the Philips family is doing well despite this media frenzy.
