Portishead has Big Plans for Next Record
By craigsternberg
Portishead, the influential experimental band from Bristol, England, have already begun work on the followup to their highly successful 2008 album Third. Geoff Barrow was recently interviewed by NME and it’s clear that this will be a very unconventional release.
According to Barrow, the band is not currently under contract and are now weighing options on how to release their next batch of new songs. Barrow declined to give specifics but he did say Portishead has “big plans” for a new project that will “come from a different angle.”
Many bands are coming up with new and unconventional ways to release their music nowadays in the world of digital downloading. Many bands like Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and even Radiohead have given away their music for free. Other options have included rare editions of albums including Vinyl, autographed CD’s, limited physical edition CDs and many more. We Are the Fallen, a band featuring former members of Evanescence have also taken a unique approach planning on releasing a few songs every eight weeks over the course of a year and a half.
As the discontent between artist and the music industry grows, how do you expect bands to start releasing their music? Is the album format dying off? What unconventional ways can you think of to release new music?
