In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, The Beatles have been experiencing a serious resurgence in popularity, partially due to the video game, The Beatles: Rock Band. In addition, EMI remastered and re-released all of the Beatles albums with new box sets, and boy has it paid off! In the five days after the September 9th release, 2.25 million albums were sold worldwide with a million in the U.S. alone. To say that the Beatles broke a few records along the way is an understatement.

EMI CEO, Elio Leoni-Scet, stated,

“Beatlemania has returned, with fans new and old embracing these beautiful albums in their re-mastered and re-packaged forms…By putting the needs and desires of consumers first, the band are breaking new records around the world more than four decades after they first started recording…All of us at EMI Music are very proud to have been a part of this exciting project and to have delivered an insightful and globally executed marketing plan.”

Here is the breakdown of the albums sold:

  • U.S: Held 16 spots on Billboard’s Top 50 with 1,000,000+ albums sold.
  • Japan: All of the 14 albums broke the top 25, and sold 840,000 albums.
  • Canada: Held 11 slots, and 15 of the top 20, and sales of 160,000 units.
  • Australia: The Beatles had 14 of the top-selling records in the country.
  • Argentina: The Beatles held 7 of the top 10 spots.
  • South Korea: 16 of the top 17 spots on the Hot Tracks chart.

This is not too shabby at all. It’s really incredible that they sold that many albums in such a short period of time, without the help of iTunes. Mind you, these are all albums that have been out for almost 40 years and were previously available on vinyl! In the coming weeks, these numbers are bound to increase. I am sure many of the people who bought these box sets, probably bought more than one at a time.

What do you think of the Beatles recent record sales? Did you go out and purchase any of their re-released material?
