Tom Waits Preparing Glitter and Doom Live Album
By Jeffrey Hyatt
Not many people were lucky enough to catch Tom Waits on his “Glitter & Doom Tour” last summer; the legendary singer-songwriter ignored the coasts and trekked across the Midwestern U.S. with his five-piece group and an iconic catalog of songs.
But now everyone can experience all the glitter and all the doom – a live recording from the tour is on the way. Titled Tom Waits: Glitter & Doom Live, the album will include a collection of songs taken from his recent tour through the U.S. and Europe. No details yet about the track list or release date, but expect a vinyl release, plus digital formats.
Wait’s label, Anti-, has not offered up any details, but photographer Michael T. Regan [via TwentyFourBit] knows about the release because the label asked for his photos to use in the packaging.
Waits dubbed his “Glitter and Doom” tour “PEHDTSCKJMBA” (pronounced “pess-kuh-JUM-buh), an acronym for each of the tour’s stops: Phoenix, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, St. Louis, Columbus, Knoxville, Jacksonville, Mobile, Birmingham and Atlanta.
Last year, NPR’s All Song’s Considered provided fans the gift that keep on giving with a complete concert stream from Wait’s Atlanta stop, recorded at the city’s historic Fox Theater on July 5; an epic two-and-a-half-hour performance, which includes songs he says he’s never attempted outside of the studio before.

No doubt many of the songs are sure to end up on the live album.
Backing Waits is a five-piece group featuring Seth Ford-Young (upright bass), Patrick Warren (keyboards), Omar Torrez (guitars), Vincent Henry (woodwinds) and Casey Waits (drums and percussion).
“They play with racecar precision and they are all true conjurers,” Waits says. “They are all multi-instrumentalists and they polka like real men.”
Along with the new, live album on tap, Waits can also be seen this fall in the film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, director Terry Gilliam’s adventure-fantasy starring Johnny Depp, Jude Law and featuring Heath Ledger in his final role.
Waits stars as the Devil. Should be fun!
