Concert Picks: Nico Stai, Asobi Seksu, Bottle Rockets…
By Lindsey Darden
Thank God It’s Friday? More like Ticketholders, Get In Front. These are our concert picks for the weekend, and yes, we’re just as antsy as you are to get things started already.
- Nico Stai | Friday, October 16 | 9:00 pm | Free | Ghettogloss Galery, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Cameras, bodies, live shoots – this sounds like it’s going to be all sorts of cool. Whether intentional or otherwise, Nico Stai’s greatly channels a flavor akin to Paul Simon and Michael Stipe of REM that works within his realm of lyrical experimentation. And hell, drinks, music, cameras, et al – if you are want for reason to get out of the house tonight - seriously, look no further. For more information, visit his official MySpace.
- Asobi Seksu | Friday, October 16 | 8:00 pm | Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY – Map | Guitars, dreamy sequences, lots of shoegaze – bet you can’t just have one. This New York based band has what we want in copious amounts. This is to be among the last of their most recent tour dates in the U.S. before they head across the pond for the better part of the rest of the year – Buy Tickets
- Brandi Carlile | Saturday, October 17 | 8:00 pm | $30 – $39.50 | Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The singer-songwriter beholds an apparent fire in her compositions, and travels seamlessly witin genres in the name of personal evolution and the well-being of the environment. Her just-released album – Give Up the Ghost - even features a collaboration with the one and only Elton John, and if that isn’t enough to pique interest, than her whole-as-an-artist sound will. - Bottle Rockets | Saturday, October 17 | 10:00 pm | $15 | 21+ | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | The St. Louis, Missouri-based alt/roots rock band’s music imparts advice through soulful story-songs – complete with beginning, middle, and end – a style these days that’s easy to screw up if deconstructed to the Nth degree. The Bottle Rockets approach seems to be to just lay it on the table, and it must work, because we’re still listening. Headlining the evening, their set will be preceded by the Sons of Bill. - Boys Like Girls | Sunday, October 18 | 5:30 pm | $25.50 | Riviera Theatre, Chicago, IL – Map | Gosh, they are so cute. We are suckers for pseudo-falsetto, but what gets us about Boys Like Girls is that they have the ability to sound more than their fair share of decent live as they do on their studio tracks – a preferred if not definite quality in making for good show. The line-up will also include performances by Cobra Starship, The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon, and Versa Emerge. Buy Tickets
