wilco Wilco To Start Work On New Album Early Next Year

Now that we’ve sufficiently listened to Wilco [The Album] enough times since its release in June, clearly it’s time for Wilco [The Next Album] – or whatever Wilco plan to title their follow-up album, which, according to one band member, they are preparing to start recording in early 2010.

Speaking with The Ampersand, bassist John Stirratt said the band has “a big session” in January where they will start on the new record.

“We’re trying to get on the ball as fast as we can because the touring has been pretty much non-stop.”

Asked when the album might be completed, Stirratt said, “I think the fall, or the next year. I can’t even imagine the fall. I would say the next year.”

He added:

The last two records have come really fast compared to Yankee [Hotel Foxtrot] and A Ghost [is Born], which were sort of day-in, day-out affairs for two and a half years. Those were sort of maniacal. We have 15 versions of each song. Now that sort of thing is not as common because we all have families, and we have to make the time really count in the studio.

We work a lot more efficiently now. I imagine it would happen faster, in the way Wilco [the album] did.

So maybe a new album in 2010, and then again maybe not. But at least we know they are going to kick-start the process, which will soon mean lots of speculation to speculate over and all sorts of Wilco-related album news to keep Bloggers busy for months.

For now the band merrily tours along, probably thinking about that next album.
