Check below for the complete lineup of acts set for Merlefest 2010.
MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and to celebrate “traditional plus” music. Highlights for next year’s festival include The Avett Brothers (joined by dad Jim Avett), Elvis Costello, Sam Bush Band, Little Feat and North Carolina music legend Doc Watson.
Doc Watson talks about the history behind the festival and the music:
“When Merle and I started out we called our music ‘traditional-plus,’ meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play. Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is ‘traditional-plus’.”
Bluegrass, folk, rock, country — this festival has it all. Mix the great music with the beautiful scenery of the North Carolina countryside and what you have is a damn good reason to make plans for next year’s festival.
“Yet again, the MerleFest line up fulfills the festival’s mission of bringing in an incredibly exciting, diverse and talented group of musicians,” said Festival Director Ted Hagaman.
“Fans can count on more surprises, spontaneous jam sessions and one-of-a-kind musical collaborations, and we will continue to add to this line up.”
Hagaman also said Elvis Costello is returning to MerleFest by popular demand for a show on the night of May 1. His only other time at MerleFest was in 2007.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are definitely going to be rockin’ next year.
