Madonna Builds Girls School In Malawai
By Seraphina L.
First, Oprah did it and now Madonna‘s joining the club. After adopting two children from the country, Madonna has started construction on a multi-million all girls school in Malawi.
The notorious pop icon arrived in Malawi on Sunday with all four of her children for a special ceremony in Chinkhota (only 6 miles from the country’s captial, Lilongwe) where she and eldest daughter, Lourdes, planted a Moringa tree in honor of this venture.
According to the Associated Press, the school in southern Africa is named Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, will open within two years (2011) and educate 500 students. Its principal, Anjimile Mtila-Opponyo, says that because Madonna “did not accept that Malawian women would not study science to become doctors,” the curriculum will have an emphasis on science and mathematics. If the school is a success, the singer plans on building more around the world based on this first model.
Not only has Madonna taken in two children from Malawi in, herself, but her reasoning for this school also stems for female justice. She shared her thoughts by announcing, “In all my travels, investigations and conversations the most recurring thing is how amazing Malawian women are, both young and old, how industrious they are and how much they deserve to be educated.”
Malawi is one of the most impoverished countries in the world and we commend the pop star for not only giving to her charities associated with the country, but also putting some thought into it.
Let’s just hope her school doesn’t have any incidents that echo what happened at Oprah’s school.
