Halloween Concerts This Weekend – The LA Edition
By Lindsey Darden
It’s that time of year again, and have we a line-up for you! If you live in LA, there’s no reason to be cooped up indoors watching the last of the Halloween specials or munching on chocolates in between trick-or-treaters at your doorstep (of course, if that’s your cup of tea, don’t mind us). We’ve numerous reasons for you to get out and in an element fit for a scream queen or pumpkin king. The stage for Halloween night is best set by one’s choice of music, so no need to contain your ghoulish delight for much longer – check out our picks below:
- Drrrama | Thursday, October 29 | 9:00 pm | $8 | 21+ | The Standard, West Hollywood, CA – Map | This Halloween pre-party has got you covered – featuring guest DJ Lady Miss Kier – frontwoman of Deee-Lite, drum and bass queen, 90′s club culture personified – and the Drrrama girls of the bi-monthly WeHo club scene in the Purple Lounge. Dress up – that’s not a request! (Okay, maybe it is, but only a little request.) For more info, call (323) 650-9090; RSVP at hollywoodsrsvp@standardhotel.com.
- Purple Lounge Fridays | Friday, October 30 | 10:00 pm | The Standard, West Hollywood, CA – Map | The Purple Lounge is at it again, with hue-inspired ambiance and, lo, a bar and plush seating, all so those partaking have nary a care on the haunting in the day to follow. Drink, mingle, and be merry, for tomorrow we… become zombies? Don devil horns? Go on a candy overhaul? All of the above, says I – but first, we drink. For more information, call (323) 650-9090.
- Halloween Rooftop Party | Saturday, October 31 | 7:00 pm | $20 | 21+ | The Standard, Downtown Los Angeles, CA – Map | This party is just the beginning. Get your best ghouls and boys together for a few hours under the stars, then make your way over to…
- East End Ghouls and West End Girls | Saturday, October 31 | 10:00 pm | $5 with costume | 21+ | The Standard, West Hollywood, CA – Map | Keep that costume on unless you intend to bring more money. Leave the naughty nurse outfits at home – or rather, on the rack – this is your chance to be creative! Never underestimate the power of fake blood and guts. And for that, The Standard will reward your good efforts with DJ sets/performances by Booby Trap, Saratonin, and Sissy Wong. For more info, call (323) 650-9090.
- Nosferatu with Organ Accompaniement | Saturday, October 31 | 8:00 pm | Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, CA – Map | For those of you looking for a more mellow fare, we offer to you silent movie Nosferatu- if you can call the 1922 classic horror movie mellow, that is. Things will become, well, not-so-silent with LA Philharmonic musician Clark Wilson on organ. For some reason, we consider any instrument to be played simultaneously with one’s feet as an otherworldly talent of its own, however apropos what with Count Orlock looming about onscreen – Buy Tickets
- Dirty Projectors | Saturday, October 31 | 9:30 pm | $20 | Jensen Rec Center Studio, Echo Park, CA – Map | The Brooklyn-based super experimental femme-fronted indie band graces the West Coast with its brain-picking but still non-eerie presence on – in our minds – the most supernatural of nights; with Little Wings (one Mr. Kyle Field) – Buy Tickets
- Day After the Living Dead | Sunday, November 1 | 7:00 pm | The Standard, Downtown Los Angeles, CA – Map | Equipped with such preceding niceties as an afternoon pool party, the aptly named Halloween Recovery Party will feature performances by Buraka Som Sistema, Zombienation, Destructo, MFG, and other guests. For more information, call (213) 892-8080. For a discounted cover price with RSVP – Click Here
- Dead Man’s Bones | Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 | 8:00 pm Friday, 7:00 pm Saturday | $20 | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA – Map | When poking fun at actors-turned-whatever these days, we really don’t mean any harm, but we know how to give props where due. Actor Ryan Gosling and cohort Zach Shields’ collaborative musical experiment gone very well will dominate The Echo for two nights this Halloween. If their live sound works along the same chilling vein as their studio sound – layered, complete with children’s choir – then color us intrigued. For ticket information, call (213) 413-8200.
Happy Haunting!
