The Essential… The Absolute… The If You Don’t Know Us By Now, Then Clearly Something’s Wrong with Your Radio Frequency…

Ah, the Foo Fighters. There’s so many ways they could have gone with the title of their forthcoming album (and rightly so), but we think that their to-be-released Greatest Hits suggests a fair amount of warranted boosting of self, while leaving room for the appropriate level of recognition and respect for a band that has been at it for the last fifteen years. Former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl took people by surprise by emerging as frontman and guitarist of a solo project that wasn’t predetermined to go any further than a demo tape. Fifteen years later, and we’ve been gifted a thorough musical summary as to why they still kick much ass on account of sixteen of their most recognizable contributions to modern rock.

The album works its way from “All My Life” to “Monkey Wrench”  -  leaping from albums One by One to For Your Honor, to The Colour and the Shape and lingering for a while, and so on. Not a bad mix. Actually, try this experiment: turn on any alternative rock station this afternoon, and within the next hour and a half, jot down how many songs by the Foo Fighters were played. Bonus if there is a block of songs. Nine times out of ten, chances are that one of the aforementioned staples will be there, holding other past and present hard-hitting offerings together.

Of this persistent display of love through radio play, we’re thinking the Foo Fighters thought:  “What  a sweet notion, this; we’ll just make a sizeable block of music to satisfy our fans.” So seamless and “essential” an album it is that we were long overdue for one either way. If anything, it provides a platform for the Foo Fighters to deliver us two new tracks – “Wheels” and “Word Forward” – for us to anticipate more in what will hopefully span at the very least another fifteen years on radio, satellite, and within global venues.

Foo Fighters – Greatest Hits will be released on November 3rd.
