The MTV Video Music Awards may have come and gone here in the states, but overseas the nomination talk is still fresh. According to Reuters, the MTV Europe Music Awards have unveiled their nominees for the Best European Act Category. This year’s show will be hosted by U.S. artist Katy Perry and will air live on MTV from Berlin on Thursday, November 5th.

- Russian pop artist Dima Bilan
- Polish singer Doda,
- Italian pop rockers Lost
- Turkish rap rock band MaNga
This year’s EMA ceremony will mark the first year that the show has been hosted twice by a city, Berlin previously had the hosting honor back in 1994. The reason behind that decision has to do with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Many well known acts are scheduled to perform this year to pay tribute to the city and honor the significance of the wall’s fall. One of the bands that will be on hand is U2.
According to the Associated Press,
U2 will play a short set in front of the Brandenburg Gate before the awards show is held at the O2 World stadium. Tickets to U2′s performance were given away free online and were snapped up within hours. U2′s concert is not only a historical nod to the significance to the Brandenburg Gate — which lies on the line that formerly divided East and West Berlin — but also a reflection of the band’s history. Their seventh album, ‘Achtung Baby’ was recorded in Berlin in 1990 and their single ‘One’ was inspired by the fall of the wall and written on the eve of German reunification.
So much will be going on at this year’s show, it makes you wonder if it will blow the American version of the VMA’s out the water. With the exception of Kanye-gate there was nothing really note worthy about this year’s show. Maybe the EMA’s can do something to make up for that.
What do you think of the nominees for the EMA’s Best European Act? What do you think about the historical significance of the show?
