This is It Earns Over 100 Millions Dollars!

This Halloween weekend, Michael Jackson’s This is It dominated the box office charts across the globe, by pulling in over 100 million dollars worldwide over the course of five days. Music fans from all walks of life showed up to catch their last glimpse of Jackson with this limited engagement and it paid off big time.
According to Associated Press, This is It debuted at number one domestically this weekend by pulling in $21.3 million dollars, which brought its five day total to $32.5 million. Overseas the film brought in another $68.5 million from shows in Japan, China, Germany, Britain, and France. After the numbers rolled in, Rory Bruer head of distribution for Sony said,
“He’s just loved everywhere on the planet. It doesn’t matter if it’s Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, South America. Every continent in the world loved him and his music.”
In an interesting yet not surprising twist, the studio has decided to extend the film’s original two week limited run allowing it to stay in theaters through Thanksgiving weekend. The studio invested 60 million dollars into the film when they bought the rights to the rehearsal footage shortly after Jackson’s passing, and they’ve already generated a return after its immediate release.
Something told me that This is It would be too good for Sony to let it disappear after a couple of weeks. They smelled money and wanted it in their pockets ASAP. Disney did the same thing when they re-released Toy Story 1 and 2 in theaters and extended it after they saw how successful it was at the box office.
