MGMT Turns Jay-Z Down For Collaboration
By Seraphina L.
We all know Jay-Z as HOVA. (A mighty confident alias to have if we do say so ourselves.) We also know him as Beyonce‘s husband, but most of all we know him as one of the best rappers out there with that genius on-the-spot flow in regards to rhymes.
So it’s not a surprise that he’s worked with the some of the biggest names in the music business. The list of collaborations includes the big kids such as U2, Kanye, possibly Regina Spektor and more. So who is going to turn down a chance to take part of Jay-Z’s massive empire? That’s right. MGMT.
The incredibly hipster and free-spirited indie duo who enjoy dancing in the middle of semi-naked rainforest people had blown up with their album, Oracular Spectacular. So it was only natural for the best to want to work with the best. Who didn’t love MGMT in 2008?
Well, it turns out the collaboration some were hyping up turned out to echo a very recent story where Jack White refused to work with Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash. Perhaps MGMT didn’t refuse to work with Jay-Z, but they’ve somewhat rejected the rapper.
According to a Gothamist interview (via Consequence of Sound via MSNBC), Jay-Z had hoped to work with MGMT for a track on recently released, The Blueprint 3. If you’ve listened to it or have a copy of the album, you can see that the Brooklyn duo is nowhere on it.
He unfortunately told Gothamist the honest truth when he revealed, “MGMT turned me down.”
Although the pairing would have been interesting to hear, we’re not too sad about it. The word on the street is that MGMT will be releasing their latest album, Congratulations, sometime during early 2010. If it’s any good as Oracular Spectacular, we’re more excited about this possibility instead of the one they turned down.
Do you think MGMT made the right decision when they rejected Jay-Z?
