Young People Would Rather Download Music – Duh

This is a bit of news that shouldn’t come as a surprise to most of you, according to a recent study by the University of Reading, 75% of students would rather pay to download their music, than pay to stream music from a site orĀ  purchase it in a store. I could have told you that! Not only that, but the students want to download from the cheapest website, meaning they don’t want to pay the extra money for iTunes and their digital rights management fees.

A new site, TunesPro.com, was recently launched and is competing with other music downloading services. The target base for the site is the younger generation who know where to download free music, but are swayed by the possibility of corrupted files and viruses. TunesPro has one advantage in it’s favor, for many songs, it only charges a mere 19 cents per song with a steep discount with the purchase of an entire album. The record companies do pick the prices, so there is a higher price for songs that come from, presumably, the larger record companies, but the site has agreements with many record companies in an attempt to keep prices as low as possible.

This really isn’t surprising that people want to actually download their music. Although CDs aren’t in as high of a demand as in the past, people still want to keep their music, even if it is just a file on a computer. iTunes won’t be going out of business any time soon, but they will be getting a run for their money as the younger, more tech-savvy generation gets older. They are just a little smarter and more stingy than their iTunes-using-parents. iTunes can really add up when you start buying all the albums you want and get really expensive.

What do you think? Where do you normally purchase your music?

I love my CDs and my stepdad is buying me my second record player this weekend. It's all about sound. I love music, and this is my opinion; if you love music, sound should be at the top of the list.

There's nothing like the tangible packaging of a record or a CD (shit, even cassettes — though those sound horrible) When you go out to the store, or get it shipped to you, there's nothing like the real stuff, stuff you can touch. The art on the cover of the album is yours, the music is really yours. Not just a song — everything, the band. Our parents have records to show off, what are we going to have? Ipods always get ruined (my nano does not work anymore after a year, and the only time I used it was when I was out jogging). If it wasn't because I literally own all of the stuff that's in there, I would be one sad music lover right now, but alas — i'm safe.

We need to own the tangible, go back a few years because we're not going to have anything to show for ourselves like our parents and grandparents did. We all know technology always goes terribly wrong.

Watch out ! TunesPro is actually a pirate site selling illegal mp3. It's been confirmed. Do not give your credit cards to them !

Who confirmed it? I've heard about it but no one really said anything official.
