When everyone first heard Dirty Projectors‘ “Stillness Is the Move,” there were very mixed reactions to it. Some said that it was completely wild and refreshing for the Brooklyn group to dip into an R&B melody. Others were horrified that the band chose to release a song that echoed anything mainstream.

Either way, the song reached #1 in Brooklyn. Leading man, Dave Longstreth, who is known for mostly orchestrating very distinctive experimental sounds was very optimistic about the song as well but like most indie songs, it didn’t cross genre lines and into the mainstream realm as quickly as it could have.

Now, Solange (sister of Beyonce and in-law to Jay-Z) has taken the matter into her own hands by covering the song and turning it into a very real R&B song by blending the chorus riff into the exact same one Erykah Badu used in “Bag Lady.”

Although the media loves to liken Solange to her sister, her style and technique is very different from the pop diva we all know. She demonstrates this in her reinterpretation of “Stillness Is The Move.”

Many of you may be surprised someone like Solange even knows who the Dirty Projectors are, but the word on the street is that she is the one who has turned Beyonce and Jay-Z onto Grizzly Bear and more indie gems. It now makes sense why Edward Droste and No Age have been tweeting about her during ATP in New York.

You can listen to Solange’s rendition on Pitchfork and you can listen/watch to the original Dirty Projectors version here!

Who does it better – Solange or Dirty Projectors?
