Be honest, when was the last time you thought about Interpol? Their last album, Our Love to Admire, dates back to 2007, and the band has been the model of under-the-radar in the years following. But the time for an Interpol resurgence is near. In a recent chat with Paste, Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino says the band has a fourth album in the works for release in early 2010.

Interpol preparing to release a new album is good news, but even better news is that Fogarino mentions that for the upcoming album the band decided to rediscover the sound they so wonderfully crafted on their 2002 debut, Turn on the Bright Lights.

Said Fogarino:

“The new record falls back towards the first. In trying to move forward, there was an unspoken realization that you can’t let go of your sonic-defining tag. There was an effort in Daniel [Kessler]’s guitar tone; he rediscovered it playing in his loft space for a year without anybody.

“The quality of that tone, played in a big room, is just beautiful. It creates an atmosphere.”

The as-yet-untitled fourth album was recorded in Manhattan’s famous Electric Lady studios.

Turn on the Bright Lights is an awesome album. No highfalutin analysis needed here. Their debut is a highlight from the early part of this decade and has lost none of its intensity and beauty as the years have run by. So the word is that album number four is going to draw on some that 2002 magic of Turn on the Bright Lights should bring a smile to fans of the quartet.

About the recording process for the new record, which finds Interpol starting an important new chapter, Fogarion had this to say:

“Its such an intense collaboration; four alpha dogs in one room is a lot to deal with,” Fogarino says. “You’ll begrudge it, but you know that each person’s opinion is another form of quality control. And when we all agree, it’s ready for someone to hear.”

Are you looking forward to the new Interpol album next year?
