spacehogs Concert Picks: Spacehogs, El Perro Del Mar, Fanfarlo...

Informally termed as “Flashback Weekend”, this weekend’s picks seem to have found not only a type of music that best suits their brand of expression, but elements of an entire era. From classic rock to somewhat of a sixties sensibility, back ’round to good ol’ dependable variations of modern indie – take your pick, a look, and a listen below:

  • Spacehog | Friday, November 20 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $15 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Spacehog’s David Bowie influence is uber intriguing, but without sounding like a tribute band (nothing against tribute bands, but I digress). With the tracks “I Want to Live” and “Mungo City” having stood out in our ears in their free stream via MySpace, it’s not too far off to wonder what calm, cool, and collected classic rock persona they’ll bring with them onstage this evening. With Sing Morpheus and The Moor – Buy Tickets
  • Designer Drugs | Friday, November 20 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | $15-$25 | Webster Hall, New York, NY – Map | If dance music is your game, then Designer Drugs is… well, one of many names on the bill this evening. For those who can discern and separate hypnotic beats from more of the same, then we suggest going at it to their remixes on the dance floor (may we suggest their remix of Annie’s “Antonio”?). All in the name of music, the science it is. With Kissy Sell Out and Trash Yourself – Buy Tickets
  • El Perro Del Mar | Saturday, November 21 | 7:00 pm | $25 | Club Nokia, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Recently featured in our BeatCrave Fav series, the title of the Swedish singer/songwriter has us wondering what she means by Love is not Pop. Does she mean as in sweet and bubbly, or as in pop… music? Based on the tempo and key she chooses to showcase her feelings on the matter (and incidentally excels at), we’ve got a feeling it could be either, both, or neither. We’ll leave it for you to decide, as you already know how we feel about her. With Peter Bjorn and John and Lights On – Buy Tickets
  • Land of Talk | Saturday, November 21 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $12-$15 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | First thought when looking at Land of Talk’s website: “I remember doing that as a kid! Only there were no crocodilian features involved whatsoever…” Still not quite sure what that’s all about, but if anything we’re sure that they take their art (visual and musical) very seriously, as shown in this video for “It’s Okay” (from Some Are Lakes). With Surprise Me Mr. Davis, North Highlands, and Linfinity – Buy Tickets
  • Fanfarlo | Sunday, November 22 | 2:00 pm | Amoeba Music, Berkeley, CA – Map | Also recently featured in our BeatCrave Fav series this week, their debut album, Reservoir, is light and airy in melody if not so much in the lyrics department (and that’s okay; bring on the masquerade and the element of surprise). If you can’t catch them so soon in the afternoon, don’t worry – they will be playing that evening at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, with Freelance Whales and The Mumlers (18+, click for map -  Buy Tickets)

Who will you be lining up to see this weekend?
