To Watch The American Music Awards Or Wait For The Grammys?

There are tons of award shows that happen every year but the annual shows that tend to pull in the most ratings include: The American Music Awards, The Grammys, MTV’s Video Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards. As usual, the AMAs always happen before the Grammy, the Grammy nominations are announced shortly after and we can all watch the AMAs on TV this Sunday night… or not.
The AMAs were originally created by Dick Clark because the The Grammys re-located to a location where CBS would air it instead. In case you didn’t know, ABC aired the first two Grammy award shows. It’s funny to know this piece of information because the tension between the two award shows always seems to fill up the tabloids with gossip even though they are months apart. (The Grammys usually don’t air until February.) Which artists are going to be at which ceremony and why did they choose one over the other?
Both award ceremonies are industry related but one major difference between the AMA’s and the Grammys is how the winners are decided. The AMAs are based on music buyers (which ultimately makes it the public who decides) and the Grammys are tallied through music industry folk through nominations and committees for the most part.
Many viewers have qualms in regards to both ceremonies and here are a few of them:
- The AMAs are pretty much predictable. Whoever is hot on the charts and airwaves will probably have the most pull.
- The Grammys can surprise us with who the board thinks has more credibility. Most of the time it’s nice to not award musicians on popularity but talent instead, yet the public’s shock result in a big thumbs down from viewers. Example: “Hello! Miley Cyrus is way cooler than Herbie Hancock!”
- The AMAs may have nominated big artists numerous times, but they may also be a no show because they choose to go to the Grammys instead.
- The Grammys have always been rated higher in credibility and the AMAs have always just been favored in popularity.
- Both award ceremonies attempt to cram way too many performances into one night. (The AMAs have 20 in store for us!)
So with all this in mind – if you had to choose – which one would you rather watch?
