U2 Will Headline Glastonbury Festival 2010
By Jeffrey Hyatt
U2 are confirmed as the headline act for Glastonbury 2010 – the festival’s 40th anniversary.
Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis confirmed the news this morning that U2 is scheduled for the Pyramid stage’s top spot on Friday night (June 25th), the band’s first ever appearance at the festival. “The 26-year-old rumour has finally come true,” said Eaves on the the event’s official website. “At last, the biggest band in the world are going to play the best festival in the world! Nothing could be better for our 40th anniversary party.”
Next year’s Glastonbury festival takes place on Eavis’ dairy farm from June 23-27.
Hard to believe, but the Glastonbury performance will actually be U2′s first festival appearance in more than 25 years; the Irish rockers will interrupt their North American tour next year to jet over to the U.K. to headline the 40th anniversary, which takes place in South West England at Eavis’ 900-acre Worthy Farm.
Said Eavis:
“I promised the best possible line-up for the show next year and the confirmation that U2 will play their first ever Glastonbury – and their first major festival gig since the early 1980s – is fantastic news.
“We’ve been trying for years… And now we’ve finally made it happen. I’m sure they will pull out all the stops to make next year’s Glastonbury the most memorable ever.”
You’d think U2 would have already played the festival after all these years. There have always been rumors they’d show up to play, but now its signed and sealed, and even better that it’s such a momentous celebration – the big, 40th anniversary. So kudos to Eavis and Co. for finally getting one of the the ‘world’s biggest band’ to get their asses to Glastonbury and play.
Thank goodness U2 are such the jet set rockers these days, because as mentioned above, U2 is going to be in the midst of a U.S. tour during the 2010 Glastonbury; they play Edmonton on June 23rd, shoot over to Glastonbury and then fly back for a concert in Minneapolis the next night.
And there are even rumors out there that bands like Led Zeppelin, Coldplay and the Rolling Stones might want to book some stage time and join the 40th anniversary line-up.
Because it’s such a big show for U2 at the 40th Glastonbury, here’s hoping they deviate from their current set-list blueprint, reach back to old-school U2 (see: October, Boy) and perform some classic tunes that will definitely blow away the crowd.
Tickets for next year’s Glastonbury sold out within 12 hours of going on sale in October.
What do you think about u2 as headliners for Glastonbury 2010?
