Girl Talk Says Pay What You Want For Old Albums, Releases Limited Edition Vinyl
By Seraphina L.
Hot on the heels of his successful album, Night Ripper, mash-up DJ, Girl Talk, released his latest album Feed the Animals with a “Pay What You Want” choice. It made sense since his label is named Illegal Art, and most people justified his samples under “Fair Use” with the pay what you want model by paying zero dollars (after answering a multiple choice question for why you were paying that amount).
Now, Girl Talk (aka Greg Gillis) has announced that all his previous albums will also be sold under the pay what you want model starting on January 8. This includes Night Ripper and his two work-in-progress albums, Secret Diary and Unstoppable.
According to our friends over at Consequence of Sound, all albums will be sold on the label, Illegal Art, again but in more exciting news – Night Ripper is available on 80-gram two LP (pink) vinyl right now! It’s a limited edition, of course, and it costs $100. That may sound pricey, but the good news is that the amount you spend goes toward a great cause.
All proceeds from the limited edition vinyl will be going toward a charity organization, mycharity: water. CoS reports, “The goal is to find at least 50 donors allowing for Illegal Art and Girl Talk to fund a $5,000 well that will provide clean water for a community for 20 years.”
This isn’t too shabby for a guy who quit his job as a bio-engineer for a career that doesn’t provide health insurance. Perhaps if you felt a little guilty for paying what you want, this charity will be your salvation.
Will you be buying his old albums or the limited edition vinyl of Night Ripper?
