Black Crowes Joined By Phil Lesh In San Francisco
By Jeffrey Hyatt
The Black Crowes wrapped up their 2009 tour Sunday night, concluding a five-night stand at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. And on the final night, guess who decided to drop by to play a few tunes? According to Relix, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh hit the stage and jammed with the Crowes for a five-song encore.
Lesh should be comfortable onstage at the Fillmore considering how many times the Dead performed there in their heyday.
Lesh emerged onstage to sit in on bass for the Black Crowes’ 5-song encore that featured all Grateful Dead tunes: “Loose Lucy,” “To Lay Me Down,” “Sugaree,” “Deal” and “Turn On Your Lovelight.”
The night before, the members of the Crowes’ opening act Truth & Salvage Co. also emerged for a cover of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” at the end of the night.
Spinner points out that this isn’t the first time the Crowes have ventured into Grateful Dead territory; the band opened for the Grateful Dead in 1995 and two years later headlined the Deadhead-ish Furthur Festival, which toured American amphitheaters that summer. Lead singer Chris Robinson has also toured with Lesh as a member of the ongoing Phil Lesh & Friends project.
In addition to putting the finishing touches on their ’09 tour, the Crowes also released a new DVD, Cabin Fever, last month, which includes footage from recording sessions that took place during five nights in front of an intimate studio audience at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. Those sessions would evolve into the recently released double album Before the Frost…Until the Freeze.
