New Moon has undoubtedly released on of the best soundtrack albums of 2009 by taking an indie turn for the better. The soundtrack’s lead single “Meet Me on the Equinox” by Death Cab For Cutie was the perfect rock sound that came off as introspective and suspenseful. The video for it featured numerous shots of Bella struggling with her loss of Edward and Jacob’s entrance eventually leading up to the pinnacle part of the film where she tries to save her true love.

With Death Cab capturing the desperate solitude New Moon‘s characters are obligated to live, the soundtrack evolved around depression quite a bit. However, if fans didn’t purchase the soundtrack with the bonus tracks they may have missed out on Lupe Fiasco‘s contribution. Known for his hip-hop albums, Lupe Fiasco: Food & Liquor and its follow-up, Lupe Fiasco: The Cool, the rapper took a refreshing spin on the genre. The track he lent to New Moon, however, is far from his signature sound. “Solar Midnight” which he produced, provides the edgier rock side of Fiasco.

After releasing a short mix-tape like project titled, Enemy of the State: A Love Story in late November, many people mistakenly took it it as a third album. However, contrary to rumors it was just a short project due to the artist’s dislike of “wasting songs” and his upcoming album is titled Lasers and does not yet have a release date.

“Solar Midnight” reflects some work Fiasco does outside of the hip-hop genre. It turns out that the rapper has also recorded other music in a punk band called Japanese Cartoon which he works with under his real name. In a blog post on his website, he also mentions that the New Moon track was not promotion for his upcoming album but was a contribution upon the request of soundtrack production team.

Fiasco has many tricks up his sleeve, and this new track is definitely a surprise not only to his hip-hop fans but to New Moon fans who have gotten used to the softer side of Twilight. Those Hot Topic kids might like it though. You can watch his music video for the rap-rock track, “Solar Midnight,” here. Instead of scenes dripping with boring desperation, you get to see werevolves and vampires fight. Yay…?

What do you think of this other side of Lupe Fiasco?
