Flight Of The Conchords: No Third Season
By Jeffrey Hyatt
The HBO comedy series The Flight of the Conchords will not return for a third season. That’s a bummer. Show co-creators Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement and James Bobin delivered the (awful) news on their website: “We’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a third season.”
The show debuted on HBO in June of 2007, a quirky look at two, folk-pop Kiwi musicians who move to New York City in the hopes of becoming music stars. McKenzie and Clement both starred and wrote the clever music for the show.
The trio closed their announcement by writing:
“We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.”
Conchords, nominated for an Emmy for comedy series over the summer, was close to perfect during its run of 22 episodes; an innovative and funny show that defined what it is to be a cult hit.
So many memorable songs: Business Time, Bowie Song, Carol Brown, Hurt Feelings, Mutha’uckas…
So many superb supporting actors: Kristen Schaal, Rhys Darby, Arj Barker…
And who knows, maybe they return for a special episode. There was chatter over the summer about the possibility of a Flight of the Conchords movie. That would not suck at all.
But for now, goodbye Conchords and thanks for the (TV) memories.
Are you bummed about no more Flight of the Conchords? What is your favorite moment from the series?
