Billboard (via Reuters) recently released their end of the decade issue and after going through numerous music charts based on Neilsen Soundscan, and when it comes to the top rock acts from 2000 – 2010, two main acts stand out in regards to sales: Linkin Park and Nickelback…

We know, we know. Linkin Park is tolerable but Nickelback with their trite songwriting? We want to ask Billboard – Why? Then again, it’s not really Billboard who is choosing these artist. They are merely the messengers. The people buy the music and request DJs to spin these tunes, so it’s really the people who have picked these over-accessible songs as the top artists of the decade.  Check out who else got high honors from Billboard in rock this decade…

  • Linkin Park: The group’s In the End album placed at No. 2 on the Rock and Alternative decade-encompassing charts.
  • Nickelback: Their song “How You Remind Me” claims top  song honors according to airplay from Alternative, Mainstream Rock and Adult Alternative Album radio stations.
  • 3 Doors Down: “Kryptonite” claimed the top song on the decade’s Mainstream Rock Songs Artists chart.
  • Green Day: Returning from their initial success in the 90s, Green Day made a strong return into the Billboard 200 with their album, American Idiot, in 2004. They also trumped other artists when they released their latest album, 21st Century Breakdown.
  • U2: Their latest album, No Line on the Horizon, gave them their seventh No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.
  • Kings of Leon: The group’s song “Use Somebody” topped multiple rock and pop airplay charts and is the No. 1 song on the Triple A decade-end tally.
  • Coldplay: The album, Viva la Vida, was the first to top each of the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, Alternative and Triple A lists.

We don’t find this list too exciting or many of these artists as “highlights” or “groundbreaking.” However, America will always choose which artists they want to succeed. What do you think of this list? Do any of these artists deserve such a high recognition? Vote below and let us know.

You declined to mention the fact that Nickelback sold more albums in the decade than any other group. Well deserved, Nickelback! Billboard's awards are based on real record sales and airplay, not some random critic's opinion or bogus poll. Music is a democracy. The people have spoken. Nickelback is the best live rock show around.
