Taylor Swift Voted AP Entertainer of the Year
By Krystal Clark
How is this possible? Taylor Swift has had the entire entertainment industry on lock for the majority of 2009 and the accolades keep coming. The country singer was already honored as the CMA Entertainer of the Year, and the Associated Press has decided to give her the top award as well.
Swift was chosen by newspaper editors and broadcast producers across the country in a survey of AP members. She follows last year’s winner, Tina Fey, and 2007′s pick, Stephen Colbert. At the tender age of 20, the singer has managed to dominate this year in every way that counts. Her last album was released in late 2008, but had a heavy presence on this year’s charts, while her headlining Fearless Tour literally sold out in minutes.
Swift was also nominated for eight Grammy Awards finding herself in the company of Beyonce and Lady Gaga. She’ll also make her feature film debut in next year’s romantic ensemble, Valentine’s Day, which also stars Twilight star Taylor Lautner. Even though she’s crossing over into television and film with her stint on SNL, AP editors say her music was the main reason they chose to honor her this year. According to one writer,
“She defines crossover appeal and would seem to be a strong business model in a declining music business. And to her fans, she’s the real deal. On MySpace and in her songs, she wrote what she felt and sang about her experiences.”
I’m sure Swift is a talented singer-songwriter, but isn’t this a bit much? Are we getting to a point where it’s Taylor overkill? There’s only so much the general population can take before they start resenting a person. Hopefully she’ll take some time off in the near future, which will give us a break from the excessive media coverage.
Do you think Swift deserves the Entertainer of the Year award from the Associated Press?
