Review: ThreadSpinner’s Night Chorus

It’s a story told a thousand times: husband and wife form a band, husband and wife meet new musicians, new musicians are added to the band, new band play live shows, new band produce an EP and then… that’s where the story can go one of many, many ways. Sadly, the aforementioned story usually ends with group of friends breaking up because group of friends have a hard time garnering fans outside of their own group of friends. After a few solid listens to ThreadSpinner’s, “Night Chorus,” however, it seems quite apparent that this particular group of husband and wife and new friends is going to follow a different path, one that includes a legion of fans and, hopefully, great success.
“Night Chorus” is the bands first EP and it already includes a superb video of the title track directed by the supremely talented Matt Walla. Within the visually appealing and playfully outlined story arc, one gets a strong sense of what kind of folks comprise this Santa Barbara based band: quirky, layered and lyrically driven.
Beyond the video (which can be seen below) and into the realm of the “Night Chorus” EP, ThreadSpinner continues with a romantic, lighthearted, slightly heavy handed beauty which weaves its way quite nicely into the remaining five tracks. Other than “Night Chorus” (which is certainly the stand out track on the EP), ThreadSpinner prove their talent in the sophisticated “30 + 1″ and the pop ballad, “Where the Game Begins.”
ThreadSpinner works quite well as a cohesive unit of strong musicians but, like many bands, they are only as good as their lead singer. Thankfully for ThreadSpinner, Sarah Ziebarth, originator of the band and lead vocalist, has the voice of a woman with gorgeous experience and unbridled passion.
“Night Chorus” is a fantastic start to what is hopefully a long, lusterous career for this self-proclaimed, “ragtag family.”
