The New Pornographers Finish Work On New Album
By Jeffrey HyattThink of this news as a really (really) awesome, belated Christmas gift: The New Pornographers have just wrapped up recording their fifth studio album. Joy.
Exclaim reports that on New Year’s Eve, Pornographer’s frontman Carl (A.C.) Newman wrote on his Twitter, “Just finished the next New Pornographers album, I am pretty damn sure.”
(A quick scan of Newman’s Twitter page reveals his liking for the song “Tubthumping” by Chumbawumba. He is not alone.)
Newman’s terrific Tweet about the new album confirms remarks made last year by Neko Case, who said that Newman had put together a new batch of demos for an upcoming New Pornographers album.
The new album is title-less, for now, and there is no release date, but for sure at some point in 2010 we will be hearing new New Pornographers. This is a good thing. The forthcoming album will the the group’s follow-up to 2007′s Challengers.
In between Pornographer albums the band stays plenty busy with side projects, solo albums and other non-Pornographer related matters.
Chart Attack sums up nicely what the gang has been up to since they collectively released the very enjoyable Challengers.
- Newman released Get Guilty, his second solo album. It’s good.
- The amazing Neko Case released Middle Cyclone, easily one of the finest albums of 2009.
- Kathryn Calder released another album with her band, Immaculate Machine.
- Dan Bejar’s Destroyer released an EP titled Bay Of Pigs.
- Drummer Kurt Dahle appeared on his brother and Limblifter member Ryan Dahle’s debut solo release, Irrational Anthems.
- Synthesizer player Blaine Thurier released a film titled A Gun To The Head, which was screened at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
Case was also just added to the cast of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, John Mellencamp’s long-in-the works musical theater collaboration with Stephen King. She’s joined by Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash and Sheryl Crow.
Excited about new music from The New Pornographers this year?
