New Jimi Hendrix Album To Be Released
By Jeffrey HyattClose to 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix will release a new album on March 8. The album, Valleys of Neptune, features unreleased material recorded by the Jimi Hendrix Experience between 1968 and 1970. The new release commences an exciting, year-long reissue program put together by the legendary guitarist’s estate and Sony’s Legacy Recordings to mark the 40th anniversary year of Hendrix’s death.
Check below for the Valleys of Neptune track-list.
The 12-track album is produced by Hendrix’s stepsister Janie, John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, who worked on Hendrix’s Are You Experienced and The Cry of Love.
Valleys of Neptune features a cover of Cream’s “Sunshine of your Love” and the original version of “Hear My Trains A Comin’.” The earliest song on the album, Mr Bad Luck, dates back to 1967.
“It’s wonderfully fresh material,” says longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer. “You hear the pure essence of the band, an in-your-face vibrancy. There were only four tracks and no overdubs, with Jimi singing as if he’s in a concert. He’s at the top of his game.”
Many songs on the new album were recorded in London’s Olympic Studios as well as New York’s Record Plant in 1969.
Janie Hendrix said (via Telegraph):
“My brother Jimi was at home in the studio. Valleys of Neptune offers deep insight into his mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist. His brilliance shines through on every one of these precious tracks.”
Other Hendrix releases like Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland and First Rays of the New Rising Sun are also set to get the deluxe reissue treatment.
Back in September we reported on Janie Hendrix’s interview with Gibson about the estate’s desire to release new material every 12 to 18 months for the next ten years. In the interview she noted that they probably have another decade of music, including video, in the vault. “We want fans to be able to hear his music in the best possible way,” said Hendrix. “With technology as good as it is, we can bring Jimi’s music — we have hundreds of original masters — to people in a pure form using those masters.”
Hendrix died in September 1970 at the age of 27.
