Concert Picks: Drink Up Buttercup, The Press, Clues…
By Lindsey Darden
Good rhythm isn’t all that’s needed to make a good show, but it certainly doesn’t hurt any. We’d like to think that good rhythm would be a given with any modern band, much less one inspired by more-than-decent influences, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. Our picks for the weekend, appear to have everything squared away in that department and then some. Check them out…
- Drink Up Buttercup | Friday, January 15 | 7:00 pm | 21+ | $7 | The Bell House, New York, NY – Map | Stirring up quite the buzz since their 2008 single “Mr. Pie Eyes,” the Philadelphia, Penn.,-based foursome will likely combine their signature fun visuals and rhythm-making (read: banging on trash cans) with sixties rock n’ roll sensibility (complete with tambourine, even). Drumming up excitement for the new year, fellas? With Ravens & Chimes, Miracles of Modern Science, and Milagres – tickets at the door; for more information, callĀ (718) 369-3390.
- Abe Vigoda | Friday, January 15 | 9:00 pm | All Ages | $5 | Echo Curio, Los Angeles, CA – Map | If one word could accurately describe the sound of Abe Vigoda, it would have to be “tasty”. Why yes, the one sense specifically involving one’s mouth can apply to one’s mental digestion – why else would they be one of our favorite LA bands, hmm? With Alps of New South Wales and Dunes – tickets available at the box office; please visit venue website for more information.
- The Press | Saturday, January 16 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | Free | Bruar Falls, New York, NY – Map | The New York indie rock transplants by way of Atlanta will be entering into their fifth year of recording with – what else? – a party show, thrown in celebration of anything from a birthday to the promise of their first full-length album dropping this spring. With That Handsome Devil, NT Trio, and Actress Cum Singer – for more information, call (347) 529-6610.
- Hockey | Saturday, January 16 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $8 – $10 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | New wave, soul, and classic rock?! So says their MySpace, re: their choice genre(s), and by George, we think we hear it. Stream, stream, baby, and just try to tell us otherwise. With Asa Ransom, and Eastern Conference Champions – Buy Tickets
- Clues | Sunday, January 17 | 9:00 pm | 18+ | $15 | Schubas, Chicago, IL – Map | Clues is their name, ambient rock is their game. What with a dreamy self-titled debut released last year and the tenacity to spend a better part of the said year touring the US and Europe, we’re hoping the Montreal-based quintet has a lot more up their sleeves than we’ve bargained for. With Skybox, Pomegranates, and Netherfriends – Buy Tickets
So, let us know… who’s on your ‘to-see’ list this weekend?
