Death Cab for Cutie paid tribute to the late filmmaker John Hughes at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Friday. The American rock band performed a cover of Simple MindsBreakfast Club classic “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” in front of a screen showing iconic scenes from Hughes legendary films such as Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

On the Death Cab for Cutie’s website, bassist Nick Harmer expressed that Hughes’ films were very important to teenagers growing up:

“His films were important waypoints for us to use as we navigate the uncertain waters of growing up and even now still give us so much perspective, insight and laughter about those uncomfortable years.”

As Death Cab for Cutie played this homage for the late filmmaker, Paul McCartney sat nearby nodding in approval. Below is the live performance. The act was solid and mellow, DCFC didn’t include the synthesizers in their performance. Without a doubt, it was the touch of the screen in the background that made the performance so great.
