Concert Picks: Movits!, Serena Maneesh, Heloise & the Savoir Faire…
By Lindsey DardenWind and rain has plagued us on both coasts in recent days, but that doesn’t mean that it’s nearly the weekend. As always, whether puddle-hopping or dance floor-stomping, we aim to give reason to get out of the house. Behold our picks.
- Movits! | Friday, January 22 | 8:30 pm | $10 | 21 + | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Dabbling simultaneously in jazz, swing/big band and hip-hop – is there nothing the Sweden-based threesome won’t try? Consider our question a challenge, as they’re already blowing our minds. Currently on a US tour; with Blasting Company – Buy Tickets
- Serena Maneesh | Friday, January 22 | 10:30 pm | $10 | 21+ | Mercury Lounge, NY – Map | Wow. Talk about a mish-mash of sound in which the first few tracks available for streaming sound like audio tapes being played backward then vacuumed into a burning heap. There’s almost the sense of simulation – of the human body through its most stressful moments, then to its most… well, serene. Even if it is for just a moment. With The Vandelles – Buy Tickets
- My Imaginary Friends | Saturday, January 23 | 9:00 pm | $5 | All Ages | Echo Curio, Los Angeles – Map | Rock alongside traces of folk and country that just sings – such good vibrations. With The Monthlies – tickets available at the box office; please visit the venue’s website for more information.
- Heloise & the Savoir Faire | Saturday, January 23 | 9:00 pm | Free w/ RSVP or $5 | 21+ | Brooklyn Bowl, NY – Map | The bowling alley-slash-live performance venue is the perfect setting for our favorite New York-based electro-rock-inspired outfit. With Bodega Girls – RSVP for one free ticket (click here for more info; scroll to the bottom); purchase additional tickets here.
- Prefuse 73 | Sunday, January 24 | 9:30 pm | $15 | 21+ | Empty Bottle, Chicago, IL – Map | 2010 is already springing forth some strong acts. In the experimental rock category, we vote Prefuse 73 for the one to watch, at least from any end of whatever venue he (yes; producer/artist Scott Herren) will be playing. On tour; with Gaslamp Killer and Voices Voices – Buy Tickets
