Last Friday, Arjanwrites hosted a “Superfraiche” lineup complete with Scott Simons, Love Grenades, Reni Lane and the lovely Brit, VV Brown. It was definitely a change of atmosphere for those of us who usually attend Spaceland for the local indie rock shows. Going out to “dance music” shows definitely has its benefits though. Unlike the the “indie rock” scene, attendees aren’t afraid to dance. The sound booth isn’t ashamed to be playing a DJ set with songs from Lady Gaga, Annie, Kylie Minogue, and La Roux either.

The host was a great emcee with his bright red jacket and although Simons kicked the event off we were able to catch LA local hottie, Love Grenades along with Reni Lane and VV Brown.

Liz Wight of Love Grenades is never one to be shy while she sings those sultry melodies on top of those Sam Sparro-influenced beats. Dressed in a pink, silk wrap around dress and zebra patterned tights, Love Grenades’ front woman strut around the stage in a manner which reminded us a bit of Glass Candy‘s Ida No. As a beauty who can make dance moves reminiscent of aerobic exercise steps look sexy, Wight kept the show moving with all her songs such as “Young Lovers” and “Tigers in the Fire” running into one another like one long but worthwhile DJ set.

Reni Lane took the stage next with her spunk and bright red hair. As one of MTV’s “First Ladies of Rock,” Lane veered us into more of a garage pop sound with her rambunctious guitar playing. Initially coming out in a black leather jacket, Lane later stripped down to a black and white polka dot dress with Chucks, whipped her microphone chord all over the stage and eventually went out into the audience as she made the daring move of performing Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”

However, it was VV Brown we had all been waiting for and with her opening song, “Everybody,” Brown did not allow even a second of her set to become a disappointment. Walking out with a glittered and feathered New Orleans-esque mask on her face and a megaphone in her hand, Brown commanded the room’s attention at once.

Sporting a vintage hairstyle, VV Brown combines the fresh attitude of today’s edge with bigger than life pop songs such as “Crying Blood” and “Shark in the Water.” Whether she was hitting a snare drum or slinking around in her black cat suit, Brown knew how to work the room. Not only did “Crying Blood” go into a Reggae remix (citing her roots as Puerto Rican and Jamaican), but her cover of Drake’s mainstream hit, “Best I Ever Had,” magnificently surpassed the original.

VV Brown has the style of Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse pop infused with R&B soul but wears confidence with such gumption, those who experience her shows can agree that this Brit’s got something more than just staying power.

Check our live photo gallery out from the show then check back later – We liked VV Brown so much we saw her again in Hollywood at Bardot for a special pre-Grammy show on Saturday!
