Neko Case Enjoys First Time At The Grammy Awards
By Jeffrey HyattIt’s a bummer Neko Case’s stellar Middle Cyclone didn’t win a Grammy Sunday night for either Best Contemporary Folk Album or Best Recording Package. In an alternate universe Case would be battling it out for Record of the Year and Album of the Year, but this is the Grammys we’re talking about, and we’d literally have to be living in an alternate universe for the Recording Academy to show any type of enlightened thinking.
Somewhere on the red carpet, in the midst of ready-made Grammy nominees like Beyonce and Taylor Swift, Spinner caught up with Case to ask how she felt being part of the awards show.
“Well, I’m really excited in an anthropology kind of way. It’s nice to see what humans do in this situation” Case told Spinner on the red carpet.
“It’s such a canonized event and I’ve been watching it my whole life. I’m overwhelmed and very excited to be here obviously, but I don’t know what to make of it yet. I’m so country mouse.”
Spinner was able to wrangle an interesting bit of info from Case regarding who among the big, music stars she was most excited to see: Sheila E.
“I found out that Sheila E is gonna be here today and she is one of my idols,” Case said. “I’m most over the moon to see Sheila E doing anything.”
If Case want’s to do an alt. country cover of “Glamorous Life” that would be fine by me.
It was definitely a busy week or Case. A few nights before the Grammys she joined Elton John and Leon Russell in a tribute to Neil Young with a rendition of “Helpless.” Can that MP3 please be available sometime soon – like now?
It’s shaping up to be a busy 2010 for the Grammy-nominated Case (has a nice ring to it): Case appears on Jakob Dylan’s upcoming album, plus they’ve planned a tour together this summer, along with several players from Case’s backing band. Then there’s Case and her New Pornographer buddies who are set to release new album Together May 4.
