Randy Newman Earns Two Oscar Nominations Randy Newman Earns Two Oscar Nominations

There was a Disney animated film released this year, The Princess and the Frog, so that means there’s a Randy Newman song, or two, to go with it. Both “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans” from The Princess and the Frog are nominated for the Best Song Oscar announced this morning in Los Angeles.

Newman has been nominated 17 times for the Oscar, having won once for Best Song in 2001 with “If I Didn’t Have You” for the animated film Monsters, Inc.

Newman’s two songs will battle “The Weary Kind” by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart); “Take It All” by Maury Yeston (Nine) and ”Loin de Paname” by Reinhardt Wagner and Frank Thomas (Paris 36).

Bingham and Burnett’s “The Weary Kind” just won the Golden Globe, so you figure they are the favorite in the Best Song Oscar race – right now. But never count out the talented, and clearly Oscar-friendly Newman, who we hope fans of his movie songs never forget how many awesome albums (Sail Away, Good Old Boys, 12 Songs) he recorded back in the ’70s and ’80s – long before he became a go-to singer/songwriter for the movie ‘biz.
