Bonnaroo 2010 will be revealing itself to the nation (or world if you’re a international traveler and music fanatic) slowly but sure on February 9. In fact, it’s going to be dragged out so much that Bonnaroo has called the line up unveiling an event – a “virtual event for Bonnaroo fans” are their exact words. If you’d like to discuss the line up as it is announced chunk by chunk in a community other than Twitter, Bonnaroo.com will have a place for you to do so.

However, we already know one of the big acts for Bonnaroo this year. The Flaming Lips had a chat with our friends Spinner and said they will not only will they be playing the Tennessee festival Friday night but they will also be performing their cover album of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. New Year’s Eve was not the last time for that, after all.

Front man, Wayne Coyne, told Spinner that “As of yesterday, we’re gonna do it at Bonnaroo at the midnight slot, the first night [...] We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ thing. In that sense, it’s perfect for that. It lets you play a little bit longer.”

So are The Flaming Lips liars for saying New Year’s the last time the would ever play the cover album in its entirety? Not necessarily. It sounds like they were just testing the waters:

“We feared it could be because we thought, ‘Well, if it’s horrible we’ll be glad we only did it once and it will grow in its infamy or whatever [...] But no, we considered if this record did in the end come out and people liked it and we were able to pull off this New Year’s Eve thing, then we thought, ‘Well, we could probably do that other places.’”

We also agree with Coyne how appropriate the album performance will be for Bonnaroo. Forget about laser shows set to Pink Floyd music. How about laying down on the grass looking up at the open sky while they play Dark Side of the Moon for you at Bonnaroo? (Just as long as you don’t lay down where Coyne may step on you in that bubble of his.)

“I don’t think it’ll be that much of a stretch to think Friday night at 2:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo would be that much different than being in Oklahoma City on New Year’s Eve. I’m sure people will be having their own party while we play this space rock or whatever. In that sense it’s perfect for that.”

Bonnaroo’s tickets will go on sale the same day they reveal the lineup in their “special” event on February 9. It’ll definitely be interesting to see who won their contest and which band they personally booked.
